The number is only useful when the inputs describe the actual project. These are the assumptions that most often change the result.
The tool calculates cubic feet, cubic yards and bag counts from area and mulch depth. It also compares bulk and bagged material costs when prices are entered, which makes it useful for both small garden beds and larger landscape areas.
The same garden bed can require twice as much mulch when depth doubles. That is why the calculator treats depth as a first-class input instead of relying on a generic coverage claim. Bag counts are rounded up to whole purchasable bags.
Bulk mulch is usually sold by cubic yard while retail bags are commonly labeled by cubic feet. Converting both options to the same project volume makes the price comparison meaningful. Delivery charges, minimum orders and local product sizes should still be checked separately.
Calculation guide
Find the area to cover, choose the finished mulch depth, and multiply area by depth. Convert cubic feet to cubic yards by dividing by 27. Bag counts are rounded up because partial bags normally cannot be purchased.
Enter length and width for a rectangular project, or use the known-area field when you already have square footage, square yards, square metres or acres.
Use the finished layer depth you actually plan to install. The calculator converts inches, feet, centimetres or metres into a consistent volume calculation.
Area multiplied by depth gives cubic volume. The tool shows cubic feet and cubic yards so you can compare bulk supplier units without doing another conversion.
Where relevant, apply density for tons, bag size for bag counts, waste or compaction allowances, and your local unit price for an estimated material cost.
Worked example
A 400 ft² bed at 3 inches deep needs 100 ft³ of mulch, or about 3.70 yd³. With 2 ft³ bags, that is 50 bags before any extra allowance.
