What to Know Before You Calculate

The number is only useful when the inputs describe the actual project. These are the assumptions that most often change the result.

Fabric width controls yardage

Linear yards describe roll length, not total surface area. The calculator works out how many rectangular pieces fit across the fabric width, how many rows are needed and the resulting linear yardage.

Patterns and direction can increase fabric

Pattern repeat, nap, grain direction, matching and seam allowances can all reduce cutting efficiency. Use the waste or pattern allowance field when the simple rectangular layout is not enough.

Use usable width

Enter the usable fabric width rather than assuming every nominal roll width is fully available for cutting. Selvage or print boundaries may reduce usable width.

If a 54-inch-wide fabric can fit two 24-inch-wide pieces across, six pieces require three rows. If each piece is 36 inches long, the base fabric length is 108 inches, or 3 yards before waste.
