The number is only useful when the inputs describe the actual project. These are the assumptions that most often change the result.

How asphalt tonnage is estimated

Asphalt ordering starts with compacted pavement volume. The tool multiplies area by finished thickness, converts that volume to weight using pounds per cubic foot, then converts pounds to short tons. Price per ton can then be applied to the estimated weight.

Thickness and density are not decorative inputs

A small change in compacted thickness materially changes tonnage. Density also depends on the asphalt mix and compaction. The calculator exposes both assumptions so you can replace the planning defaults with project or supplier values.

Use the result as a material takeoff

This page estimates hot-mix quantity, not pavement structural design. Base preparation, drainage, lift thickness, compaction targets and mix selection should come from the applicable project specification or paving professional.

How to Use the Asphalt Calculator

Calculate compacted pavement volume first. Convert thickness to feet, multiply by area, then multiply cubic feet by asphalt density in pounds per cubic foot. Divide pounds by 2,000 for short tons.
